Special Guests:
Meredith Mundy, Editorial Director, Abrams Appleseed
Meredith Mundy has been editing books for young readers for 25 years and hopes to continue doing so for at least 25 more! Following more than a decade at Sterling Children’s Books, she is now Editorial Director at Abrams Appleseed, where she is acquiring books for ages 0-5—board books, novelty books, and very young picture books. She is specifically seeking concept books with a twist (see HIPPOPPOSITES and LLAMAPHONES, for example), and clever books with a holiday tie-in (see HAPPY LLAMAKKAH!). She lives in Putnam Valley, NY, with her graphic designer husband, Richard, and their red tabby, Martha.
Meredith’s Presentations:
Hooking Your Reader: Crafting the All-Important First Line in Contemporary Picture Books – In this two-part workshop, we will explore what makes a fabulous and unforgettable first line of a picture book to hook readers and keep them reading. Please bring a notebook & pen or laptop and TWO COPIES of a picture book manuscript you are working on, preferably with a non-rhyming first line. Once we start workshopping the first lines, magical transformations are guaranteed! Finally, we will discuss ways to apply what we’ve learned from revising the first lines to the revision process for the rest of the manuscript.
While this workshop is targeted towards picture books, all writers will benefit from the principles taught. For those that write longer works, please bring a notebook & pen or laptop and TWO copies of the first page of your manuscript. Writers that are working on a few different manuscripts (be they picture books, MG, YA) are free to bring more than one manuscript in case there is time to workshop more than one of your first lines. Just make sure to bring TWO COPIES of each manuscript.
